The Narendra Modi
government has started the process to select the next Director of the Central
Bureau of Investigation (CBI), with almost five months left for the tenure of
the incumbent Anil Sinha to end in December.

The Central Bureau of
Investigation (CBI) is the foremost investigative police agency in India, an
elite force which plays a role in public life and ensuring the health of the
national economy. . The CBI is involved in major criminal probes, and is the
Interpol agency in India.
Present CBI Director: Anil Sinha
Tenure: The CBI Director has a fixed tenure of two years.
Who appoints the CBI Director ?
Under the Lokpal Act, a
selection committee, headed by the Prime Minister and comprising the leader of
the single largest Opposition party and the Chief Justice of India or a Supreme
Court judge nominated by him as a member, appoints the CBI Director.
Selection Process
The Department of
Personnel & Training (DoPT) will
shortlist officers on the basis of their experience and integrity in
investigating anti-corruption cases.
Before the selection
panel approves the name, the names of the candidates have to be recommended by
another panel consisting of

The Central Vigilance
Commissioner,
·
The Vigilance
Commissioners,
·
The Home Secretary and
the Secretary,
·
Co-ordination and Public
Grievances at the Cabinet Secretariat.
