The Karnataka State’s
roads — the fourth most dangerous in
the country when it comes to the overall fatalities due to road accidents —
claimed as many as 394 lives of children
below the age of 17 in 2015, 57 of them less than five years old, says a report
of the Transport Research Wing, Ministry of Road Transport and Highways.
This number, though, was less than the previous year’s, when 990
children lost their lives in road accidents in Karnataka.
Despite the big number of
fatalities of children, Karnataka fares better than other States: tied at the
11th spot with Kerala in 2015 in the dubious list that Uttar Pradesh tops with
2,610 deaths.
In 2015, across India, 12,589 children below the
age of 17 were killed in road accidents,
that is, 8.6 per cent of the total
road crash fatalities in the same year.
